2019: Mid-Year Update Part III

In our last two progress reports we gave updates on projects that have been finished so far this year, and ones that are underway. But we’re always looking and planning ahead, so today we’re giving you a sneak peek on upcoming projects and plans.

Wintergreen Renovation

Although this area is a bit outside our usual work radius, we’re really excited to take on this renovation in the western side of the state. Our clients’ 40-year old house has been taking on strong weather on its west-facing side and the driving wind and rain have caused a great deal of leaks. We’ve been tasked with building a tight enclosure without sacrificing the design that allows for great mountain views.

A lot of good opportunities for improvements!

Admittedly, not a bad view for a work site!

Mid Century Remodel

We are really excited to get started on this renovation to a true mid century house. This home was built in 1959 and designed by Alan McCullough. Our clients recently purchased the home and are planning updates that include a new kitchen, new master and other general updates which will all be in tune with the original architecture without being too over-the-top mid century.

RIC Team Updates

We also wanted to take this opportunity to welcome Ben Bower as the newest addition to our team. Seth and John are our long-time veteran project managers and they continue to take on more responsibility with projects, allowing us to tackle even more fun stuff. Our carpenters, Pat and Hunter, have another year of experience under their tool belts and their skill sets have really expanded, allowing them to both take the lead on some projects. Gregg put his organization and coordination skills to great use and is now our Production Manager, overseeing work across all of our build projects. We’ve said goodbye to Drew and wish him the best as he embarks on the freelance life and Nate who will be moving back to his home state of North Carolina. They will be missed and we appreciate all the hard work they have put into RIC!

Additions to the Toolbelt

We are always looking for the best materials and tools for the jobsite, and this year we’ve started using Henry’s Blueskin - a fully adhered air barrier (fun stuff for us building science nerds).

We’ve experimented with black locust wood and shou sugi ban for exterior materials, which you can read more about in a previous blog. Loba Invisible has been one of our ‘go-to’ floor finishes on a few projects recently. We love how it leaves the wood light colored and natural looking.  Plus it’s also a great protective product for wood trim.  Win win!

Overall in 2019 our strategy continues to center around sustainability, detail and craftsmanship. As we grow, our goal is to embody these values, no matter how many projects we have in the works. Thanks to a great team, we have been able to make this happen, and have so many fun projects in the pipeline that we can’t wait to share with you!
